Acecibo Observatory located in Acecibo, Puerto RicoWhat Is SETI?

You may have been exposed to SETI through a number of recent movies, including Contact, Independence Day, and The Arrival. However, the truth about SETI can be found on the web and this website hopes to give people a little information about the cause and its history (as well as its future).

SETI stands for the "Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence." It is the science of using telescopes, radio and optical, to search the skies for signals from alien civilizations.

At one time, NASA took part in funding the cause, but today, scientists are doing what they can with the help of private funding. However, as you may remember from the movie, Jodie Foster's character in Contact had a hard time convincing people of the worthiness of this kind of cause, let alone good reasons to put money into the research and development of an activity which may not yield any worthy results.

  • To read more about the history of SETI, visit the History page.
  • For more information on Radio Astronomy, visit the Radio Astronomy page.

SETI World Wide Web Scavenger Hunt by visiting the Scavenger Hunt page.
